supporting responsible horse ownership
Too many horses are at risk of slaughter in Canada and it doesn’t have to be that way. Together we can take steps to reduce the number of unwanted horses and ensure horses are given the last act of kindness when there are no other viable options.
Our grants will directly support horse owners and horse rescue organizations by providing financial assistance for humane euthanasia and spay/gelding procedures.
Whenever possible additional grants are available to support the extraordinary work being done by horse rescue organizations across Canada.
Last Act of Kindness
All life ends and making that decision for our horses can be one of the hardest acts of love we will ever do. But by not being there for your horse in it’s greatest time of need can mean that your horse ends up in a slaughterhouse. Sometimes the need for the Last Act of Kindness is unexpected, as a result of a sudden tragedy. Other times you know the end is near and you're trying to plan. Regardless of your circumstance, we are here to help you and your horse. Horses don’t fear death, they fear suffering. There is no shame in choosing humane euthanasia over rehoming your horse.
If your horse needs the Last Act of Kindness you can apply for financial assistance. Approved applicants are awarded a grant towards the veterinarian bill for humane euthanasia procedures. Funds are paid directly to your veterinarian.
Gelding/Spay Operations
If you own a colt or stallion it is so important to have him gelded. Unless your horse is registered and there's an exceptional reason for producing his offspring, breeding your horse is not the best idea. Thousands of unwanted horses in Canada and the USA enter the slaughter pipeline and it could have been prevented. Plus geldings make excellent horses and their quality of life is much better as they're able to interact safely with other horses and humans alike.
Spaying a mare is most often done for medical reasons. A spayed mare will also likely be more emotionally stable without the monthly mood swings and experience other benefits. Talk with your veterinarian about your mare and any concerns you may have to determine if having her spayed is right for her.
Whether your stallion needs to be gelded or your mare needs to be spayed, we are here to help you and your horse. You can apply for financial assistance for these medical procedures. Approved applicants are awarded a grant towards the cost and funds are paid directly to your veterinarian.
For Horse Rescue Organizations
Both our Last Act of Kindness and Gelding/Spay Operations grants are available to registered horse rescue organizations in Canada.
We understand that special circumstances arise when a little extra help means the difference between being able to save horses at auction, assisting law enforcement with a seizure case, and other unexpected pressing needs. We will do what we can to help.
